■TANKER WAR, 1984–88

A phase of the war which saw the warring parties attacking oil tankers (of all nations) in a bid to deny their opponents the finances from oil, using fast air strikes. The USA and the USSR responded by providing protection to oil tankers in the Persian Gulf.

■IRAQI AIR OFFENSIVE, 1985–88

Iranian successes during Operation Badr in 1985 prompted Saddam Hussein to launch major air and missile attacks against Iranian cities, particularly Tehran. To offset the advantage enjoyed by Iranian fighter aircraft, the Iraqis also made use of SCUD missiles. The offensive escalated in 1986, when the Iraqis began bombing passenger trains and civilian aircraft, reaching a further peak in 1987 with attacks on 65 Iranian cities, in which many civilians were killed and wounded.
